Memorial for Susanne Taflinger Flaherty ’47
Susanne "Sue" Flaherty, age 89 of Northfield, MN and formerly of Park Forest, IL, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2011 at the Northfield Hospital following a brief illness.
Susanne Alice Flaherty, the daughter of Raymond and Myrle (Rahel) Taflinger, was born and raised in Paris, IL. Following graduation from Paris High School she attended Millikin University in Decatur, IL, for two years and then transferred to the University of Illinois where she received a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work. She then attended the University of Chicago for her Masters Degree in Social Service Administration.
In 1945 she was united in marriage to John Joseph Flaherty, making their home in Park Forest where they raised their four daughters. Sue held many professional positions in the Social Work Field including the American Red Cross, Family Service Agency, Oak Forest Medical Hospital, Manteno Psychiatric Hospital, and Tinley Park Psychiatric Hospital as an Illinois Licensed Clinical Social worker.
As a teenager she was very active in sports including tennis and basketball and was on the high school and college tennis teams. In her professional life she was a member of many organizations including the American Academy of Qualified Social Workers, Diplomat of Clinical Social Work, and the Park Forest Health Commission. With her daughters she was a group leader for numerous Girl Scout Groups, active with their many school activities in Park Forest, and took a leading role in many groups of her church.
Sue Flaherty is survived by daughters Michelle Johnson of Northfield, Cathleen McGraw of Eau Claire, WI, Christine Place of Minneapolis, Laureen Stengler of Crete, IL; grandchildren Carrie Johnson, Eric Johnson, Daniel Johnson, Corrina McGraw, Colleen McGraw, Michael Place, Lareissa Stumm, Jean Marie Place, Scott Place, Maureen Helm, Angela Stengler, and Karen Stengler; great grandchildren Landen Johnson, Blake Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Raya Pfeiffer, Logan Stumm, Brennen Stumm, and Cael Helm. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, and brothers James, Alan, and John Taflinger.
