Memorial for Jane Hughes Cole ’43
Jane Cole, an educator who touched many lives in her two decades of service in the Decatur Public Schools, died Sunday, April 8, 2012, at Hickory Point Christian Village. She was 90. Born Dorothy Jane Hughes, on Jan. 13, 1922, in Peoria, IL., Jane was a daughter of Joseph Earl and Augusta Hamann Hughes.
The family moved to Decatur in the late 1920's, and young Jane attended Mound School. She graduated from Stephen A. Decatur High School in 1939 and attended Millikin University for two years. While employed at the Herald & Review newspaper in Decatur, she met Edwin Frederick Cole, whom she married in 1942, in San Francisco, where Edwin (Ed) was stationed during World War II. The couple returned to Decatur after the war and became parents of three children, Kevin, Janis (Kathleen) and Douglas. She completed a bachelor's degree in education at Millikin in 1964 and earned a master's degree from Millikin in 1968.
After teaching fifth grade at Harristown Elementary School for several years, she taught fifth grade at Orville Spencer Elementary School. She served in the MacArthur High School guidance department until her retirement. Jane and Ed traveled extensively in the United States, Europe and China. They often rented a flat in London during the summer months. After Ed's death in 1988, Jane continued her foreign and domestic travels. In Decatur, Jane volunteered for many local organizations, including the Decatur Municipal Airport's Visitor Information Center, Macon County Historical Society Museum and the Decatur Memorial Hospital Thrift Shop. She was active in the Macon County Assistance eXchange (MAX). Jane was a lifelong member of Decatur's Grace United Methodist Church and belonged to the Daughter's of the American Revolution. She learned to play the dulcimer in the 1980's and was a member of a folk band called Skiffles.
Jane is survived by two sons, Douglas Hughes Cole and his wife Connie J. of Decatur and John Kevin Cole and his wife Patricia A. (Patti) of Clinton Twp., Mich; a daughter Kathleen Cole Tucker of Minneapolis, Minn; granddaughter, Ashley Jane Cole of Decatur; and a sister, June Malloy Kinsey of Milwaukee, Wis.
