Memorial for Donald L. “Larry” Bechtel ’57
DECATUR -- Bechtel, Donald L. “Larry”, died January 12, 2019 at Imboden Creek. There will be no visitation and no service. Memorials are suggested for the Kiwanis Golden K scholarship fund, the Rock Springs Center for environmental study or the Barbra Bechtel scholarship fund at Richland Community College.
Mr. Bechtel was born July 1, 1935 in Springfield, Illinois to Eugene J. and Helen L. Bechtel. He graduated from Decatur High School in 1953 and from Millikin University in 1957. He served in the United Stated Navy Reserve from 1953 to 1961. He married Barbara J. Taylor in 1956. He worked for the United States Steel, A.E. Staley, Murphey, Jenne and Jones, CPAs, Decatur Public Schools, and retired from Caterpillar Inc. in 1997.
Mr. Bechtel was a past President and Lietenant Governor of the Kiwanis Golden K Service Club, Adult Boy Scout leader, a member of the Decatur Jaycees, Decatur Hockey Association, Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen, and ROMEO Club. He served on the Board of Directors for the Millikin University Alumni Association, and Dove/RAVP. He also taught classes on data processing in the DPS Adult Ed program and AARP. He was an Alzheimer’s Association Community Representative. He enjoyed reading and had a longtime interest in the history of paddlewheel steamboats.
Survived by his daughter Julia Ann Bechtel of Decatur, son Michael Eugene Bechtel of Decatur and John Lawrence of Prophetstown, Illinois. His parents, wife, and one granddaughter preceded him in death.
