Memorial for Joanne McDavid Baird ’40
Joanne McDavid Baird, 93, of Decatur died August 4, 2012, in Chicago.
Mrs. Baird was born at Decatur Memorial Hospital October 15, 1918, the daughter of Horace W. and Bessie Lamb McDavid. She attended Decatur public schools and Millikin University where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi. She graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in sociology.
Mrs. Baird served as director of Decatur Girls Scouts and later earned her nursing degree at Wesley Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She married Donald G. Baird on October 19, 1946 and was active in the PTA organizations of Dennis Elementary, Woodrow Wilson Junior High, and MacArthur High Schools in Decatur where her children attended. Joanne served as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader during the fifteen years her children were involved in the scouting program.
She was a charter member of the Decatur Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, a member of the Jr. Welfare Association, and a member of the board of the Visiting Nurses' Association, Webster-Cantrell Hall, and the Millikin Alumnae Association, a volunteer with the Red Cross Blood Bank, and was a member of BW chapter of PEO and the Study Class of Decatur.
Joanne served as an elder and was a lifetime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was employed for 16 years as a part time occupational nurse at the AE Staley Co. In her later years she was a volunteer for Project Success, listening to children read at Benjamin Franklin elementary school.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, Decatur Memorial Hospital Foundation, McDavid Scholarship at Millikin University, Baird Scholarship at Richland Community College, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
Mrs. Baird is survived by her brother Joseph McDavid (Adelle) of Chesterfield Missouri; her children, William Baird (Nancy) of Federal Way, Washington, Carolyn Stupin (David) of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Barbara Holowka (David) of Ithaca, New York, Margaret McClintock (Larry) of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and James Baird (Wendy) of Chicago, Illinois; eleven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband.
