Why Millikin is a good investment 
Giving to Millikin affects the future for all of us. Your financial support of Millikin directly translates into graduates who will become the future leaders whose powerful influences will shape our society and make a better world for all of us.

Millikin is also a good steward of your financial investment: The university spends only about a nickel in fundraising costs for each dollar raised, well under the national average for fundraising. More than 94 cents of each dollar raised goes directly to where it is needed most – to benefit students. In contrast, the national average is approximately 25 cents spent to raise a dollar.

Giving a gift of any size is also a good way for our alumni to increase the value of their diplomas, since college ranking guides look at the percentage of alumni who support their universities as a marker when ranking institutions of quality.

When I was invited to deliver the baccalaureate address during Commencement 2004, I challenged the graduating class to give something back to their new alma mater. Soon after, I had to honestly ask myself:  “What have YOU done for Millikin?”  My answer to that question resulted in a wonderful journey to establish the Smith/Orlandini Book Award, given annually to a student with demonstrated financial need in the department of exercise science and sport. This ultimately cultivated my desire to establish a permanent fund honoring my family's connection with Millikin. 

Accordingly, I have taken steps to endow the Smith/Orlandini Scholarship. Additional support for the endowment has come from alumni family members, who share my pride in knowing that we are helping assist future generations of Millikin students.
