Phyllis Jo Morris Lotchin Class of 1959

Class of 1959, Chapel Hill, N.C., Oct. 1, 2022

“My father could have afforded to send me to college, but he said, ‘Girls don’t need to go to college’ … I told him that I was going, and I went and worked my way through college with my little scholarship. I worked in the dining room, and a lot of girls did that, at that point.” Lotchin, who retired as Associate Professor of English from North Carolina Central University in Durham, majored in English at Millikin, where she met her husband, Roger Lotchin ’57, who retired as Professor of History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Phyllis and Roger taught briefly at Chatham Glenwood High School before pursuing graduate education at the University of Chicago. They moved to Chapel Hill after Roger received his Ph.D. in Western History. While teaching, Phyllis continued to finish her doctorate and assisted Roger by researching and proofreading his books on San Francisco history. She also taught the Evelyn Wood Speed Reading method in California and adult education classes at Duke University.
