The Bachelor of Music degree with an
emphasis in Piano Performance seeks to develop in its students the highest
level of technique and musicianship in performing on piano (and other
keyboard instruments). It also strives to motivate students to develop
reasoning ability, aesthetic awareness and discriminating judgment, together
with a sense of purpose and a zeal for continued learning.
Students interested
in a career in freelance performance or in teaching at the college/university
level will find this degree an excellent preparation
for the graduate studies that work in such fields will require. Many
students also find this degree to be an excellent and thorough preparation
for the
teaching of piano as an independent teacher (that is, in a private or
shared studio). Even if one eventually decides not to pursue such careers,
the
highly disciplined work ethic and the thorough study and investigative
skills developed by this degree will be welcomed in many and diverse
fields.
In addition to the required University-wide courses and the music
core taken by piano students in all degrees, this degree includes extensive
additional work in performance studies, in music theory and in piano
pedagogy (the teaching of piano to students).
