Office of Multicultural Affairs and International Student Services
The Office of Multicultural Affairs and International Student Services (OMA/ISS) serves the needs of multicultural and international students through advocacy, support, intervention, advising, leadership and access to opportunities. The OMA/ISS serves as a resource for educational programming for students, faculty and administration on issues relevant to appreciation for and inclusiveness of diversity at Millikin University; assists international students with arrival and orientation to the U.S. culture and academic system; aids in interpretation of Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations; and strives to provide a place where all students feel welcome, accepted, encouraged and empowered.

Career and Experiential Education Center
The Career and Experiential Education Center helps Millikin students develop and implement their career goals. It also assists students in incorporating community service experiences into their education, assists faculty in developing community-based teaching, and implements the civic education portion of Millikin’s mission.

Recognizing that career development is a lifelong process, the Career and Experiential Education Center offers a variety of services designed to assist students in every phase of their career development. All Career and Experiential Education Center services can be categorized into the following three areas of career development:

  1. Self-Assessment and Career Exploration:
Students needing assistance in choosing a major or in selecting a career can make an appointment to meet individually with a career counselor. Career assessment tools available in the Career and Experiential Education Center will help students understand their unique traits (values, interests, personality and skills) and identify careers that complement those traits.

  2. Experiential Learning:
Students should actively seek meaningful work and/or service experiences to supplement their education. The Career and Experiential Education Center aids students in locating part-time, internship, and summer employment opportunities that are related to their majors or career interests. Additionally, the center also assists students in locating community sites for work-study and off-campus service learning experiences. Students may register for several elective courses in service learning. Volunteer opportunities and other civic engagement activities are also promoted through the center.

  3. Employment and Graduate School Assistance:
Students begin focusing on getting a job as graduation approaches. The Career and Experiential Education Center is a great resource. Students routinely visit us to:

    • Learn how to write resumes and cover letters
    • Interview effectively
    • Develop a targeted job search

While some students begin their careers immediately after graduation, many students choose to continue their education through graduate or professional studies. Staff leads students through the graduate school application process that could include:

  • Clarifying educational goals
  • Identifying and applying to potential graduate schools
  • Preparing to take admission examinations
  • Writing personal statements
  • Selecting a graduate program

Health Counseling Services
The Millikin University Health Services is located in the new Health and Counseling Center on the corner of Wood Street and Fairview Avenue and maintains regular office hours Monday through Friday. Doctor’s hours are posted each semester.

Any residential student who becomes ill during non-office hours should contact his or her resident assistant or hall director who will evaluate whether to contact a physician or take the student to a hospital emergency room.

Health Services is staffed by health care professionals (physician, licensed practical nurse, a nurse practitioner, and a physician’s assistant) for emergency and routine medical care. Long-term physical problems should be handled by the student’s personal physician.

Most health services are free of charge to full-time Millikin students. Students are charged for minor procedures, laboratory tests, injections, and some medications and prescriptions. Health Service personnel will administer allergy shots to students. Students are responsible for obtaining the serum and orders from their allergist. The serum can be stored in Health Services. There is a charge for each injection. Flu shots are offered each fall and the Health Services physician strongly recommends that all students be inoculated. Hepatitis B vaccine (a three-shot series) and a meningitis vaccine are also available and recommended. The doctor also recommends that any student who has not yet had chicken pox receive the chicken pox vaccine.

Health Services offers a full laboratory service through Quest Diagnostics. Prescriptions written by the Millikin physician may be filled in the Health Services when available. All student charges are billed monthly to university bills.

Students and parents are advised to check their own medical insurance plans to be sure students are covered while enrolled at Millikin. Health Services does not bill insurance companies; a statement will be provided if requested. Upon entering Millikin, a student is required to complete a university health report and must meet all state requirements regarding immunizations. Failure to comply with state mandates will cancel registration privileges.

Students need to know their insurance policy information in case they must go to the hospital emergency room. Be sure they have the name of their insurance company and policy number.
