Off-Campus Learning

For students starting in the fall of 2008 or after, the Off-Campus Learning requirement no longer exists as part of the University Studies curriculum. However, an off-campus requirement (internship, supervised teaching, etc.) may still be mandated by the major. See the graduation requirements of your major for more details.

For students starting in the Fall of 2007 or prior, a three-credit requirement entitled Off-Campus Learning exists within the University Studies curriculum (for all majors). This is an experiential component that is designed to provide learning in another community or environment beyond the Millikin classroom. It also facilitates theory and practice through the application of what you have learned at Millikin to the outside world. You might choose to fulfill this requirement with a single activity or a set of activities. As a rule, every credit of off-campus learning requires 40 contact hours outside of the Millikin classroom.

Examples of off-campus learning experiences include: internships, practicum, international immersion, regional immersion, service learning*, Chicago Center, field work, client-based work, MU Main Stage productions, and participation in a summer music festival, symposium, seminar, or camp.

The freshman year is not too soon to begin thinking about this requirement. Final proposals should be submitted to your advisor for approval. You may enroll in summer off-campus activities (internships, etc.) at a reduced rate per credit.

* Service learning in Freshman Seminar cannot be counted toward the off-campus requirement.
