Millikin's Seventh Annual High School Art Show highlights area students

Millikin University's Art Department and Center for Entrepreneurship will host its Seventh Annual High School Art Show. The show will be on exhibit Monday, Oct. 28 through Saturday, Nov. 9 in Perkinson Gallery in Millikin's Kirkland Fine Arts Center. A closing reception and awards ceremony will be held for teachers, students, parents and the public on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 4 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

The show will highlight the exceptional artwork of high school students from throughout central Illinois. High school art teachers submitted their best student works for the art show. The submissions were juried by the Millikin University Art Department and the selections will be guest-judged for the opportunity for students to win cash prizes and scholarships to Millikin University.

The guest judge for this year's show is Millikin alumna Shani Goss '92. Goss is the co-owner of Goss Grfx advertising in Decatur, Ill. Although a graphic designer by day, she also creates and sells her fine art all over the country. Heavily influenced by Pop Art culture, music and typography, her style merges these elements in a retro-modern, urban style. Combing lyrics of her favorite songs and artists into large scale mixed media paintings brings a new dimension and aesthetic to her work. Her current studio, "Gallery 3," is at The Vault Arts Collective in Tuscola, Ill., and her work can be seen at www.gossgallery3.com.

The competition's focus on entrepreneurship sets this event apart from other art competitions. Students have the opportunity to participate in Arts, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship (A.C.E.), a day of workshops and presentations designed to engage students in the business of art. These sessions will include a how-to on preparing a portfolio for college submission, a workshop on the studio art experience, and a chance to participate in a young professional artists roundtable. In addition, students will be encouraged to price their work to sell at the show.

Cash prizes will be awarded to Best of Show and to selected Honorable Mention Award recipients. Millikin Scholarships will be awarded to the top three winners. Millikin Art Faculty Awards will also be presented.
