Millikin University’s Art Department and Center for Entrepreneurship are pleased to announce an exhibit featuring artwork from the Third Annual High School Invitational Juried Art Show. Artwork will be on display from November 7 through December 5 in the Perkinson Art Gallery at the Kirkland Fine Arts Center. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
High school art teachers across the state were asked to submit their best student art, and the submissions were juried by the Millikin Art Faculty. Selections were then invited to hang in the exhibit. This experience debuts the talents and hard work of both high school art teachers and students in a competitive environment.
“At Millikin, we’re very proud of the Center for Entrepreneurship, and the opportunities we provide students to encourage entrepreneurial growth,” commented Sharon Alpi, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship. “This competition is a great way to extend opportunities in arts and entrepreneurship to high school students throughout the state.”
Submissions will be guest-judged by Drake University Assistant Professor of Art and Design Ben Gardner, a 2001 Millikin art alum. Competition winners will be announced at the Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony on November 14 from 4-6 p.m. in the Perkinson Art Gallery. The reception is open to the public, and offers an opportunity for student artists, teachers, and families to network with Millikin Art Faculty. The awards ceremony will begin at 4:30 pm.
The top four winners will be awarded cash prizes and an opportunity to have their artwork featured in Blue Connection, Millikin’s student-run retail art gallery. The Millikin Art Faculty will issue two talent awards and Millikin University scholarships are made available to the top three winners as well.
Alexa Snyder, a freshman art major, is a past participant and “Best in Show” winner of the art show. When it came time to pick a college, Millikin proved to be the right place for her. “From the beginning, Millikin has been a great environment for me,” she said. “The faculty have a great energy that inspires students to reach above and beyond to achieve their goals.”
