First year students at Millikin University will get a jump start on their college experience during Millikin’s First Week program, to be held August 19-23.

The week is designed to help students make a smooth transition into college life before regular classes begin on August 24.   First Week activities begin with Move-In Day on Wednesday, August 19 when students move into their residence hall rooms.  A section of Oakland Avenue, between Eldorado and West Main Street, will be closed to traffic from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day.

An integral part of First Week is the First-Year University Seminar Courses.  New students work with Millikin faculty and are assisted by First-Year Experience Mentors to understand how college courses and college life will be different than their high school experience. Ethical reasoning will be a part of the focus of the First-Year University Seminar Course.

First Week also offers new students a chance to learn about important student services offered at Millikin.   All first year students will also take part in Millikin’s innovative alcohol training program, Training for Intervention Procedures (T.I.P.S.).  The training given to this year’s first year students will maintain Millikin’s campus wide alcohol training program.  Millikin was the first college/university in the nation to offer this alcohol training program to its entire student body.

New students have plenty of opportunities for social activities during First Week, where they can meet and interact with fellow students.  Activities during the week include a hypnotist, variety show, and the Welcome Picnic and Ice Cream social.

A highlight of the week will be a performance by Chapter 6, a nationally-acclaimed a cappella ensemble who found their start as a student a cappella group at Millikin.  The performance will take place on Friday, August 21 at 8:30 p.m. at Kirkland Fine Arts Center.  Chapter 6 has appeared with The National Symphony Orchestra at The Kennedy Center, and was featured on "American Idol: Season 7" in conjunction with band mate Luke Menard’s Top 16 run.  The group tours the United States, Canada and Asia, performing in a wide variety of venues.  The performance is open to the public; tickets are not required.

The week concludes with Opening Convocation on August 24 at 7 pm in the Kirkland Fine Arts Center, where Millikin faculty and students, new and old, gather to celebrate the beginning of the academic year.  The program will feature Millikin faculty and student speakers.   For a detailed schedule of First Week events, visit www.millikin.edu/studentdev/studentprograms/firstweek.
