Why did you choose MU?
The size of the university offered a more attractive environment than large public universities, and the liberal arts focus was appealing to me.

What activities did you participate in as a student at MU?

  • Helped construct and establish WJMU Radio
  • Served on University Center Board
  • Played tennis

What are some of your accomplishments since graduating from Millikin?

  • Founded Nims Associates Inc., an information technology consulting firm, in 1985.

When not supporting the Big Blue, what is your favorite thing to do?
Travel, from short domestic trips to cruising to international destinations to hiking trips in the mountains of several countries.

Who is your most memorable MU professor or staff member and why?
Ronald Shelton, professor emeritus of mathematics. Dr. Shelton brought an enthusiasm for his teaching and for his subject that was contagious, and made classes with him interesting and exciting.

What is your most memorable MU experience?
Living in the dorm at Mills Hall was a dramatic change from my “previous life.” Those three years gave me insights into a wide range of people, their life experiences, their values and their choices. These insights helped me to decide what kind of person I wanted to be.

What is one concept you learned at Millikin that you use regularly?
I learned that studying and being aware of a broad array of subjects and topics is valuable – the things we learn in one area often provide us with ideas and solutions in another area.

What advice do you give to current Millikin students about preparing for life after graduation?
While at Millikin, you are gradually making the transition from student to productive adult. The opportunity at Millikin to engage in Performance Learning allows you to do real work, with real feedback from people outside the institution. Take advantage of those opportunities, because they will prepare you well for professional life after graduation.

Anything else you would like to share with the Millikin community?
My years at Millikin, my experiences there, the things I learned, the people I met, the joys and the challenges – all these have had a huge impact in making me the person I am today. I look back fondly on those formative years, and appreciate the opportunities Millikin gave me to mature and develop.
