Adults who have already earned a bachelor's degree and want to switch careers into teaching can earn Licensure through the PACE program. Licensure is available in:
- Early Childhood Education (Illinois type 04, birth through 3rd grade) will also complete:
- English as a Second Language Endorsement
- Special Education Letter of Approval from the Illinois State Board of Education
- Coursework required for the Developmental Therapist Credential from the Department of Social Services.
- Elementary Education (Illinois type 03, kindergarten through fifth grade) will complete:
- English as a Second Language Endorsement or
- Learning Behavior Specialist 1 Endorsement
Students in the Elementary Education program will complete four semesters of coursework with the fourth semester reserved for student teaching. There are a few additional required courses which many students transfer into the program. Students who have not already completed these requirements may also choose to enroll in these courses through PACE.
In addition to program coursework, students complete at least 140 hours of internships that will allow them to apply what they are learning in actual classroom settings. While all courses will be in the evening, students will need to be available during the day when area schools are in session to complete the internship hours as well as during the student teaching experience in their final semester.
Millikin offers Secondary Education Licensure for students in one of the following fields:
- Social Studies
- Physical Education
Students interested in pursuing their Secondary Licensure must already hold a bachelor's degree in a subject area identified above. The courses required to complete this program are offered in combination with the traditional day-time program and though the PACE program. Students will begin taking courses through the PACE program while they are also completing necessary state testing requirements, if they have not already done so.
If an adult is interested in Secondary Education (Illinois type 09, grades 9-12), he/she would need to take both PACE evening courses as well as traditional daytime courses.
Following completion of state testing requirements, students will then be prepared to complete a full semester of coursework in the traditional day-time program and will then complete their student teaching experience in the following semester. Students will need to be available during the day when area schools are in session to complete the internship hours and during the student teaching experience in their final semester. Even though students will be taking traditional and PACE courses, they will be paying under the PACE cost structure.
