Minor in Theatre

The minor in theatre is an exciting 21 credit course of study designed for those seeking a wide array of experiences within the theatre arts. The minor is an open enrollment program with no audition or interview requirements. Any student with the available time and desire to explore what theatre has to offer is welcome to enroll. Theatre minors are encouraged to become active participants in departmental and mainstage activities. On and off-stage opportunities are available in our mainstage season as well as with our student-run theatre company, Pipe Dreams Studio Theatre. 

Theatre Minor Curriculum

Core Requirements (12 credits)

  • TH 102 - Intro to Technical Theatre (3 credits)
  • TH 131 – Play Analysis (3 credits)
  • TH 141 – Acting I (3 credits)
  • TH 321 – Directing I (3 Credits)
  • Electives (choose 9 credits from the theatre curriculum in consultation with your advisor)

The School of Theatre and Dance is not responsible for possible course conflicts that may keep students from completing the minor. Therefore, students should consult with their academic advisors to map out a strategy to ensure all requirements will be met.

Minor in Dance

The Minor in Dance is an exciting and rigorous 21-credit course of study designed to introduce students to a wide array of disciplines.  Dance minors are the core of the Millikin dance community and are very active in our annual dance concert as performers and choreographers.  Opportunities often present themselves for dance minors to become active in campus and community events as choreographers, teachers, performers, arts advocates, etc…  Any student wishing to pursue a minor in dance is welcome to do so. 

Dance Minor Curriculum

Core Requirements (11 credits) 

  • DA 100 – Dance Lab (1 credit) TH 141 – Acting 1
  • DA 101 – Jazz Dance I (1 credit) MT – Any Music Theory course
  • DA 102 – Tap I (1 credit) MH – Any Music History course
  • DA 105 – Modern I (1 Credit) AH – Any Art History course
  • DA 107 – Ballet I (1 credit) *Or other courses approved by the dance faculty*
  • DA 430 – Choreography Project (1 credit)

Electives (choose one course 2-3 credits)

  • TH 141 – Acting 1
  • MT – Any Music Theory course
  • MH – Any Music History course
  • AH – Any Art History course
  • *Or other courses approved by the dance faculty*

Specialization (8 Credits)
In addition to the core requirements listed, each student must select two areas of specialization and complete a total of 8 combined credits in those areas, (example: ballet and modern). A minimum of 5 credits must be at the 300 level or above.

  • DA 446 – Theatre Dance (2 credits)
  • DA 420 – Musical Theatre Choreography (3 credits) OR
  • DA 490 – Workshop in Choreography (3 credits)

While students may begin taking dance classes as early as their 1st semester, the formal process of declaring the minor does not happen until the spring semester of their sophomore year. All classes taken prior to that point will be credited toward the requirements for the minor.

Students with advanced training may be placed in higher levels by the dance faculty but must still complete a minimum of one course in each of the aforementioned disciplines.
