 2013 University Center Board

Students in their second year should:
1. Give selflessly of their time and talents to serve others, thereby, creating an understanding of the needs of others through their service.
2. Feel more connected with the Millikin community.
3. Demonstrate personal responsibility and be proactive in participating in volunteer opportunities.
4. Differentiate between individual difference, culture difference, and university similarities.
5. Engage in healthy lifestyle choices.

Activities & Events

Para-Professional

Students can begin their exploration of leadership through applying for a Para-Professional role.  Students who are in their second year and beyond are encouraged to be a Para-professional. Opportunities include First Year Experience Mentor, UNITY: Social Justice Advocate, Building Manager, and Resident/Community Assistant.

Service Learning

Students will have the opportunity to engage in additional service opportunities through communication from the Career Center. Additionally, there are several student organizations such as Alpha Phi Omega and Breakaway that engage you in your civic responsibility.

Student Organizations

Students are encouraged to seek out at least one lower level leadership position within a student organization (i.e. Committee Chair or liaison).  These positions should be sought through active participation in a student organization.

Leadership Series

All second year students will have the opportunity to attend a leadership series that explores goal setting, value congruence, time management, meeting management, leadership styles, etc.

Leadership Awards Ceremony Committee

Students will have the opportunity to serve in creating and implementing the annual Leadership Awards Ceremony.

Leadership Awards

Students will have the opportunity to apply for the second year student leadership award. This award recognizes the achievements and leadership potential of a second year male and second year female. The award is announced during the Leadership Awards Ceremony held the first Sunday in May.

Leadership Portfolio

Students will be able to finalize their Leadership Portfolio and request a meeting with the Department of Student Development to reflect and evaluate their leadership journey.

Study Abroad

Meet with the Center for International Experience to explore opportunities to engage in different cultures through participating in one of many opportunities to study abroad.

Career Exploration

Students have an opportunity to set up a meeting with the Career Center to create and develop a resume.  Additionally, the Career Center provides career building programs for students to engage in how to be a successful employee.

Optional Activities

End of Semester and Year End Events

These social events at the end of each semester will be planned to serve as an opportunity for all students to celebrate their accomplishments and be recognized for their outstanding commitment to their own leadership development. 

Other Activities

A variety of other leadership opportunities and activities will be offered by the Office of Inclusion and Student Engagement as well as other departments each year.
